Sustainable Style: Trend or Movement? What do Students Think

I had a chance this past April to swing by the Cornell Textiles & Fashion School and give a talk on sustainable fashion. Students are a good gauge as to how information is being dispersed and what effect it is having because they are more informed than the average person, but the information is obtained in drastically different ways.

How did they read sustainability in the press?

Answer: As a trend.

It wasn't clear for the majority of them that "sustainability" was something that would be here season-to-season. They commented that how it is written about in the press makes it "feel" like a trend, more than something that is here to stay.

There you have it journalists: Now you got to start addressing the fact that this is a valid movement in the textiles and apparel industry.

For the fashionistas: I'm wearing AOI, which is a recycled kimono double-cuff jacket with an organic cotton "LOVE" tee by Katharine Hamnett.

Lord B. strutting it on the runway in Les Racines du Ciel.
He thinks it is so cool how the silk dress is dyed by earth and potatoes.

Lord B. coiffed and poised on the EFS Posters. Stay tuned for Paris' Next Top Parrot.
With three floors of ethical fashion, Lord B had his work cut out for him.
(He mainly hung out with the ladies backstage though).
Lord B's Bag of Choice: Nahui Ollin
Lord B. looking pretty on the gift bags.
Lord B. jams to the bluegrass music.
Lord B. looking bootyliscious from behind
Lord B. approves of the sexy librarian look.
Lord B. hamming it up with Isham and the girls from Brazil.
That dirty bird sure does get around.
Lord B. watches on as hair gets done backstage.
Lord B. takes a nap on my shoulder.
Lord B. approves of the fair trade Veja sneaker. Green please.

This is one parrot's quest for ethical fashion. Year after year he comes back to Paris for the premiere event on all things eco and stylish - The Ethical Fashion Show. This year was no exception. What does Lord B have to say? He gives it two talons up.
More to come...

Stay tuned for the fourth edition of the Ethical Fashion Show® Paris, the seminal event in the world of ethical and eco-fashion. October 11th-14th 2007.

Ethical Fashion Show® Paris will showcase over seventy designers from all five continents that present fashion which is respectful of man and the environment. Among new countries featured this year: Australia, Afghanistan, Austria and Laos.

This year again, the event will renew the recipe which made the previous years a resounding success : showrooms, animations, catwalk shows, as well as conferences focusing on different topics related to social and environmental responsibility for companies operating in the textile industry.

Ethical Fashion Show® Paris is originally aimed at professionals and media, but the organizers plan to make the event open to the general public on one of the days (Sunday 14th).

Ethical Fashion Show® Paris will take place at the Tapis Rouge, one of Paris' prestigious fashion locations. The original Parisian department store was built in 1784, and is in the heart of Paris, close to the train stations Gare de l'Est and Gare du Nord.
