This is my letter to Mayor Greg Nickels of Seattle. He became the 51st and current mayor on January 1, 2002. He recently launched Seattle Climate Action Now, a grassroots campaign encouraging everyone in the Seattle area to reduce global warming pollution at home, on the road and in their neighborhoods. He also spearheaded the US Mayors Climate Protection Agreement, an accord signed by over 600 US cities committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. I'll be writing and meeting with mayors from many cities throughout 2007-2008 in order to bridge climate change action happening on university and city-level.

Dear Thomas Friedman, This November 5th, the largest grassroots engagement with Congress on global warming to date, will be led not by Al Gore or paid lobbyists, but by thousands of young voters under the banner of the 1Sky Campaign and Power Shift 07 - the first-ever national youth summit united to solve the climate crisis. Power Shift 07 is slated to be an historic event, as this will be the first time in history that young people will be testifying to the government on global warming (and in so many numbers).
5,000 young people, representing all 50 states and over 300 Congressional districts, will flock to University of Maryland and Capitol Hill for the Power Shift 07 training sessions, rally, and lobby day. We have secured meetings with 100% of the Senate and 75% of the House of Representatives. The young voters will pledge for the following:
- 5 million green jobs conserving 20% of our energy by 2015
- Cut 80% of our carbon emissions by 2050 and 30% by 2020
- Moratorium on coal fire power plants and no new nukes
The lack of leadership in our nation's energy policy and the "War Against Global Warming" is appalling. In times like these, we need true leaders. Perhaps with the lack of leadership though, comes greater momentum for change. That's how I view Power Shift - a Phoenix rising from the ashes. And I'm happy to report that we HAVE found true leaders who have risen to the challenge...
We just happen to look at them everyday in our mirrors.

There's been a lot of oddities and goodies happening in and around the "green" fashion scene as of late. I had the opportunity to participate in 4 ethical fashion shows this year and a host of great cause-related programs.Check out images of Seattle Fashion week here and here, which featured looks from Future Fashion, Thieves, Sling&Stones, Lizzie Parker, and others. at home in PennsylvaniaOne fallen leaf cannot replace the beauty of autumn.
My flight from
The street here is lined with tall stands of sycamore. There seems to be no autumn in the city - not like what we have in the Northeast. Even though, a littering of browned and brittle leaves huddle together on the sides of the walkways, as is to hide from the tromping feet of fellow passerbys.
I shuffled
Unconsciously through a trailing pile of leaves.
Crunch, whoosh, crunch.
It was the same sound my feet would make through the wooded trails behind my house on a cool October day. I can easily count it as one of my favorite sounds in the world. The sweet scent of soil mixed with red maple, sweet birch, and glistening inky caps would fill my lungs with each passing step. If I were lucky, I would find a big yellow sugar maple leaf to take home with me, and press it between the pages of my old Rodale herb book.
The extra day in Paris was worth it, if only for just that memory.
